2014 Entries Announced
Our 90th annual contest is set to be one of the most keenly fought in recent years as a record entry of 31 bands (33 entries) have decided to make their way to Molinnis Park on Saturday June 21st. Following a two year absence, Camborne Town return to Bugle looking to add to their impressive tally of 36 Royal Trophy wins but will face stiff opposition from the two most recent winners St Austell (2013) and St Dennis (2012). The Championship Section bands will tackle Edward Gregsons ‘Connotations’ and the wonderful March ‘The Contestor’ (T.J.Powell).
Following their debut at Bugle last year, the recently formed Roche Brass have entered the First Section this time around and are joined by Helston Town, Pendennis Brass and Yeovil Town where they will be tested by ‘Spectrum’ (Gilbert Vinter).
‘Penlee’ (Simon Dobson) along with The Philip Wilby arrangement of ‘Alleluya, Sing to Jesus’ is the test for our Second Section entries Bodmin Town, Bugle Silver and Forest of Dean Brass who we welcome to Bugle for the first time.
The Third Section entries includes two bands from the South of England with Jubilee Brass (Oxford) and Tadley Concert Brass joining Heyl Town where the Kenneth Downie penned ‘A St Austell Suite’ is the test.
Our Fourth Section has a truly bumper entry and it is good to welcome back one of the bands that played in our very first contest in 1912 St Agnes Silver who visit us for the first time since 2008. Our Training Section that was introduced a few years ago to encourage younger players and to try to help safeguard the future of our event appears to be bearing fruit as 2013 Training Section winners Lanner Brass Academy now progress to our Fourth Section. Other entries here where the bands will tackle ‘Little Suite for Brass Band (No 1) by M Arnold are Camborne Junior Contest, Jubilee Brass (Oxford), Liskeard Silver, Lostwithiel Town, Newquay, Okehampton Excelsior Silver, Redruth Town, St Newlyn East and Tadley Concert Brass.
The Youth Section has a small but select entry and Mount Charles, St Austell and St Dennis will play their own choice test piece.
Finally we come to the Training Section which is becoming ever more popular it seems as we have six entries that will play 10 minutes of their own choice music. This Section has a sponsor for the first time this year and many thanks must go to Damian and Miranda at The Bugle Inn for their support. The entries are Indian Queens, Pendeen Junior, Soundhouse, St Dennis, St Newlyn East and St Stythians.
Please note that due to the exceedingly high number of entries, the morning march will now start at 0930 hours and the contest itself will start at 1000 hours. The committee have also engaged a second adjudicator as the contest will have to run with no breaks at all so David Marshall will be joining Ian Porthouse.
